Zeeuwsche Zoute is the first Dutch product to receive the international GEOfood label gets. A special recognition, because GEOfood is not just any label. It shows that a product is truly connected to its environment: the Oosterschelde, in the middle of the UNESCO Global Geopark Scheldt Delta ..
What is GEOfood?
GEOfood is an international label for food products made within a UNESCO Global Geopark. Only products that are locally produced, sustainable and have a direct link to the landscape are eligible. So it is not only about taste or quality, but also about origin. A GEOfood product tells something about the place where it comes from, both in a geological and cultural sense.
Zeeuwsche Zoute: salt from the Eastern Scheldt
Zeeuwsche Zoute extracts its salt from the clean water of the Oosterschelde National Park, a unique tidal area. It is produced on a small scale and using traditional methods. But above all: it is done with an eye to the future. No mass production, but attention to quality, nature, origin and cultural ties with the region. The salt is local, honest and fits perfectly into a sustainable food chain.
Geopark Scheldt Delta: landscape with a story
The Oosterschelde is located in the UNESCO Global Geopark Scheldt Delta, an area stretching across Zeeland, West Brabant and parts of Flanders. This is a landscape shaped by millions of years of water, wind and human intervention. Think peat formation, floods, reclamations and dike construction. In 2024, the area received the official status of UNESCO Global Geopark. This makes it internationally recognized as a place of special geological and cultural-historical value. Exactly the kind of area GEOfood is focused on.
Why this is important
For Zeeuwsche Zoute, the GEOfood label means international recognition. Not only as a quality product, but also as an example of sustainable, local production. For consumers, it is a clear signal: this product comes from a unique area recognized by UNESCO, is made with care and tells a real story.
